Monday 15th Plymouth White Rabbit

POW BANG POW, tour starts today!!! With mega super excitement chickenhawk are off on tour again. We set off at 10am on our way to the very southerly Plymouth, the drive is long and tiresome and the endless motorway turns into stories of men living in yellow castles protecting the motorways from end of level robots and more nonsense about flying on lightning. We arrive at the venue at roughly 7ish, just in case you were wondering and i didn't make it clear that is a lot of driving. The venue is next to a bus station carpark and the delightfully cheery parking attendant won't let us in simply because we have a trailer. I hold my mouth when my brain tells me to inform him there is no bomb in our trailer. As a result we have to cart our gear from outside Staples, through the bus station, into the venue. This is proper rock and chips. I think we left our roadies on the motorway somewhere, maybe in the yellow castle? Outcry collective are soundchecking as we arrive and they sound pretty fucking mighty... Introductions are made and sillyness ensues immediately... Beer and food!!! WINNNNNN. I envisage more of this over 2 weeks...

The venue never really fills up properly, a slightly anticlimactic start to the tour but the gig is still lots of fun and it seems like the other guys in the other bands are all cool guys... Off to a local hostel, good night...

Tuesday 16th Exeter The Cavern

Thank fuck we’ve got the big drive out of the way, very short drive to Exeter today. On the way down yesterday we spotted Buckfast Abbey, home of the good stuff, so we stop off there to look for pissed monks and buy some ‘medicine’. I stole a book called the ‘The lives of saints for boys’ by mistake... Information i have learnt as a result includes Joseph, of surrogate father to Jesus fame, is the patron saint of a happy death...
Watched a video about Monks making booze in a room called ‘video,’ straight to the point at least.

We arrive in Exeter nice and early, load in and check into our Hostel, very nice, very nice. Try and have a quick sleep but the atmosphere in the room descends into madness so I don’t bother, tested out the newly purchased medicine, tasty tonic...

Soon enough it’s time to go back to the venue for soundcheck, its only a short walk from the hostel so we dont have to DRIVVVVVEEEEEEE. At the venue i get to stare at the Batman pinball machine, its just a normal pinball machine with Batman written on it, I do know this, honestly I do but for some reason its so hypnotic.

Outcry collective get told off by the Cavern manager for trying to eat their food before soundcheck, which I find a bit odd, is it like don’t eat before you go swimming?

Matt’s playing on the floor tonight, soundman isn’t the best pleased with this idea but Barry needs floor riffs tonight. If the name changing confuses you, i have now began referring to Matt as anyname i can think of, he is fine with this. Venue fills up pretty quickly and after the first band play theres at least 3 times the amount of people in than last night already.

We play really fucking well and enjoy it a lot more than last night, completely destroyed after the gig but theres loads of breadsticks so everyone is a winner.

Wednesday 17th Bristol The Croft

Another relatively short drive (2 hours) in comparison with the horrendous beast that was Monday. I always love coming to Bristol, we always seem to park next to a homeless clinic, this time we pull up and a bunch of alcoholics are cheering on 2 dogs fighting over a bone... Amazing... We load in and the 4 of us decide to sit in the empty trailer and have a beer, rock.

After wandering around and trying to find another parking space, I discover Steve from Outcry Collective is randomly following me on the other side of the road, he might be my new favourite person, I think he's secretly insane. After discussing our upcoming Maida Vale session, he suggests we only call Mike Davies, Michael and refer to the cosmos and the ether when discussing writing our music. As I said he's a genius. A little while later we had cider and then lost the rest of the evening. It turned up a week later in the merch bag. This wasn't to be the first thing we would lose on the tour.

In fact we also left a guitar at the venue, well done Chickenhawk number 1.

Thursday 18th Maida Vale/Nottingham Rock City

Today we are recording a Live session for Mike Davies’ Radio One punk show, load in is at 11 in London, we are in Bristol, up at 6 out by 7. Bullshit. Odd feeling of excitement crossed with complete tiredness as a result of going to bed at 4 last night.
We arrive at 10:50, angry BBC reception tell us we can’t load in until exactly 11. I have heard rumours about the amazing maida vale canteen, however it was shit, all they had was coffee and pastry.

We are recording in Maida Vale Studio 4, this is where all bands do session work. The other rooms are for full on orchestras, there are pictures on the wall of The White Stripes, Scissor Sisters, everyone has been here Led Zeppelin, Nirvana and now Chickenhawk...

Right off the floor the room sounds amazing, there is so much history and power in one room its ridiculous. We nail our four songs quickly and after a quick break the super powerful Miti mixes them. They sound fucking banging, cant wait for these bad boys to go out on air.

As soon as we load out we bomb it back up the M1 for our gig in Nottingham. We are tired boys and when we arrive at Rock City we pretty much load in and play. Apologies to the girl i made count us in, she looked really uncomfortable doing this... I can't even remember my head touching the pillow that night..... 12 hours solid sleep follows!

Friday 19th Middlesbrough Uncle Albert's

After the equally amazing and body destroying day before, it's time to kill ourselves again. Back in the car, trailer ready to go and off to Middlesborough. For some reason I can’t really remember what happened on the journey up...

However we get lots of food and beer at the venue, I didn’t tell the others this but I decided to eat pizza upside down to see if this has any effect on digestion, it doesn’t. Imagine that.
Gig is free entry... Come on midlesborough come and see some free riffs. It sounds like im begging, I'm not its a fucking right line up.

No local support so we are on first, the venue fills up nicely before we play and the Middlesbronians seem ready to be riffed, we play probably the best gig of the tour so far even amidst familiar crys of ‘play the one about the egg!’ Later the culprit told me he heard someone shout that at one of our gigs previously and now plans to shout it at all our gigs... Thats fine.

Saturday None Tour Day

Nothing much happened, Steve Outcry points out the signourney Weaver boob shot in Ghostbusters, having watched this film more times than is healthy or even vaguely cool I feel useless that I have never spotted this.

Sunday 21st Manchester Roadhouse

Im not sure why i dont have much to say about this gig, it was a good gig and i enjoyed playing but nothing weird or bizarre happened. Having gigs fairly local to Leeds means sleeping in your own bed, this is a good thing. If this gig was in Japan I couldn't have done this. Dear Japan please put my band on, I promise I won't moan about not having my own bed in your country.

Monday 22nd Sheffield Corporation

All Hawk memebers are at work today so this means it’s a late depart to Sheffield. As soon as we arrive we load our gear in and set up to play. Chickenhawk is good friends with Sheffield having played here many many times in our life and its nice to see old friends and meet new ones. Vegan Chilli for the bands is a definite welcome and discussions on what sort of sordid hellish situations have occurred in the backstage area will not grace this page... Back to Leeds post gig for a lovely sleep in preparation for an early start tomorrow, or so we thought...

Wednesday 24th Birmingham The Flapper

Plan: Leave Leeds at 10:00, pick up drum equipment, visit Matamp factory in Huddersfield along the way.
Reality: Leave at 13:00 some members of the band have waking up disabilities.

I personally always enjoy playing in Birmingham, they are fond of a good bit of rock and I always cross my fingers for Ozzy and Rob Halford being in attendance, why wouldn’t they come to a gig like this? I may start putting them on the guest list for all gigs. I've read somewhere that Greg from Dillinger Escape Plan always puts James Hetfield on their guest lists in the hope he will one day attend. Good Lad, I imagine his face is his backstage pass though. I have heard he has 'AAA' tatooed on his forehead.

Again no local support tonight so we are on first, plenty of people down for this show, the sound is brilliant and its another really good Chickenhawk show. Due to nowhere to stay we have to drive to Derby that night so we depart after Outcry Collective play, we thought we had all our gear, we were wrong we left all the screen printed posters in Birmingham. Well done Chickenhawk number 2.

Thursday 25th Cardiff Clwb Ifor Bach

Driving from Derby to Cardiff isn’t too bad a drive an after a stop off for fuses, a stop in Bristol to pick up the missing guitar and another stop to do a phone interview with Radio 1’s Mike Davies. We arrive in Cardiff in plenty of time, being a genius I enquire the castles name in the middle of Cardiff city centre... Answers on a postcard. Again we were struggling for somewhere to stay but thankyfully Mark Foley from ‘Strange News from another star’ saves our bacon, coincidentally he also feeds us bacon the next morning.

After speaking with the soundman it becomes clear that they have a club night at the venue immediately after and there is a strict curfew of 9:30 that all bands need to be finished by. Again no local support which means we are on at 7:15. By the time we soundcheck its not long until we have to play, people start to shuffle in at 7 but people are light on the ground as its still early.

After the gig Mark suggests we leave the trailer at his practice room. I totally misinterpret the word ‘his’. It becomes clear that it is actually a set of practice rooms and he owns the business. The rooms are brilliant and outside one room is littered with BFMV flight cases, I can only imagine the power inside that room.

This is the first time we get to have post gig jollies and Mark takes us into Cardiff towncentre, stopping mid way to chat to some bald chap on a bike, after the chat Mark informs us that this guy used to be in Catatonia... The power of Cardiff

Friday 26th Bournemouth Ibar/Stonehenge

Last day of the tour! Mark makes us some delightful bacon sandwiches and plenty of Coffee before we depart.... I love you Mark, can i move in?

No more gigs on this tour, massive rubbish rubbish. The Computers and Outcry Collective have both been extremely tight every night, made us 100% step up our game plus they were all lovely boys. Bournemouth is a bit of a drive but we get to stop off at Stonehenge, somewhere 75% of us have never been before. Unfortunately it is a mega let down. Its £6 to get near it, as we are such rebels we had our photos taken from the otherside of the fence. Ryan is displaying his excitement here:

Ibar is a pretty small venue but it fills up pretty quickly, last gig of the tour is mega good and is 100% fun to play, again we have to depart quickly as we are travelling to London for a place to stay. Watch Outcry Collective play for the last time and cry all over the floor, everyone ends up swimming out of the venue and we teleport to London. Some of this is a lie. Goodbyes are exchanged and we depart with the Ghosbusters soundtrack as our soundtrack to London.

Another week another photoshoot that goes exactly to plan with no problems whatsoever…..

Seeing as how its been so long since something bizarre happened at a Chickenhawk photoshoot we thought we’d do something to change with that.

Plan: Photographs in a room filled with smoke, no problems there surely…. Setting up the room was going swimmingly well (after about 30 minutes of pumping a smoke machine into a room it was literally swimming in smoke.) Everything is fine everything is fine no problems everything is fine……..

......until SMOKE ALARM…..who knew smoke + smoke alarm = alarm going off, who knew? …..cue panic and swift removal of all lighting equipment from the room where we shouldn’t have really been in the first place

One night in the snow with a photographer called Danny

On a dark cold night Chickenhawk ventured into Todmorden up a giant hill covered in snow and ice with a photographer named Danny North in tow…….

Aim: to find a location that Danny claimed was 30 minutes walk in ‘normal’ conditions. Stick brought the whole world in a bag, including chairs and unicycles, which were quickly removed from the bags before we set off.
In hindsight if things had gone worse we may have needed some of the more bizarre items but more on that later……

Walking along the main path leading to this giant hill was fine in comparison with what was to come, it was bitterly cold and we had to wrap scarves around our faces.

When we began to ascend a hill covered in ice and snow that’s when the fun began…

The snow was deep and I mean really deep in certain places you had no idea if you would tread on solid ground or fall through less dense snow that was up to your waist and this did happen A LOT. We climbed for about an hour, the peak seemed a mile of hunting for this golden location. We finally reached a wall which would hopefully break the wind a little, it didn’t and although we were now on flat ground the snow was still just as deep, we could now see the forest we were aiming for but the funny factor had already gone.

We eventually approached this ‘forest’ it was clear no one else was around for miles and hadn’t been for a long time. This places was mightily impressive: rows of trees with a ‘corridor’ down the middle something straight out of Edward Scissorhands. We thought it was snowing, it was raining ice….thats something I’ve never seen before.

Walking down this corridor Danny picked his choice location and in true Indian Jones style we wrapped a cloth round a stick, doused it in turps and set it alight…..

We, I say we but I actually mean Danny experimented with different set ups and eventually settled on us with our backs to a tree, by now I think there was just pure ice on my feet and it felt like my whole legs had pins and needles. Danny set the camera up with a very long exposure which involved us staying as still as possible for about 30 seconds, not very hard when you are the coldest you’ve been in your life.

I am really not complaining about Danny giving up his time to do this photoshoot but it seemed an age to get the actual shot and standing still does not help one bit.

Once we had all the shots that’s when the fun was completely gone everyone was really struggling and as a result we came back down the ‘hill’ a lot quicker, as the ice in my boots began to melt for some strange reason the cold water felt really refreshing. I cannot explain to you how bizarre my legs felt. Myself and Matt bombed on ahead with the thought of a warm car…. Once we got onto the main path down to Danny’s village I kept slipping on the ice, in total FIVE times, you think I would’ve learnt from this….clearly not….all I wanted was a warm car.

When we got back to the cars, I pulled off my boots and literally poured a pint of water out of each one, I bet that looked amazing when it was frozen inside around my toes. Truly bizarre things always seem to happen to this band….this is one of them, the location Danny found was amazing, I’m now adding arctic explorer to my C.V and no I’m not over-reacting…..total man challenge.

Moral of the story: always have photographs taken in a sauna.

What did Hawk do 2009?

Well, the short answer is.....lots.... much more than we ever imagined, its been the busiest and most exciting year we've had as a band.....heres the long answer....

Having only released our debut album at the end of 2008 it seems an age since we were the 3 piece that recorded those songs, we are a different band now, for a start theres 4 of us, we've now played close to 100 gigs with Matt.

2009 encompased us releasing our music on many different compilations including our first release on Brew and Dance to the Radio, major party giggle power 20000.....

Nasa vs Esa Video - Februrary
In February we began planning and filming our first ever music video. With Roach productions at the Helm we created the space themed video for ‘Nasa vs Esa’ from our debut album. The video turned out to be a lot of fun to do, we made most of the props ourselves from many Blue Peter style weekends and we were more than happy with the result....

We also went to Scotland for the first of 3 visits with the more than delightful Errander

I Hate this, do you like it? Zombie Video

Shortly after we'd completed the 'Nasa vs Esa' video Danny North got in contact with us, he said he had a copy of our album and would love to take some photos of us...somehow this spawned into him making his directorial debut for 'I Hate this, do you like it?' which would eventually end up being released on our 'A. Or Not?' Ep in September.
The whole experience was a lot of hard work but ridicoulous fun, from planning out the logisitics, to the 100+ extras that came down for filming to the silly amounts of Jam and Jelly that were used.......take a gander at some of the photos from the filming........

To say we were pleased and excited and happy with the outcome is an understatement, Danny, Roach, Make Up Artists all the extras we're amazing and we really can take little credit for this video.

Kong Tour - July

In July we toured with our now label mates Kong, this was in support of their new album 'Snake Magnet.' We played our asses off on this tour and i think we really rose to the challenge, this tour was a lot of fun and we are very thankful to Kong for opportunity to do this....good people...good band....

Leeds/Reading Festival - August
In August we played Leeds/Reading festival which was ridiculous fun and culiminated in us being mentioned 3 times in one issue of NME, odd, yes….

We were also featured on the front cover of a magazine for the first time, Leeds' very own vibrations magazine were kind enough to put our ugly mugs on the front, photography by the genius of Danny North:

A. Or Not? released - September
Our first release as a 4 piece was our ep ‘A. Or Not?’ This came out on 9th September, we had a delightful release gig with the mighty Blacklisters, These Monsters and Godzilla Black, this also marked the premiere of the zombie themed 'I hate this, do you like it?'

Crossfire Massacre - Halloween - October
On 31st October (Halloween) we played at the Crossfire Massacre, which was a massive party in a random car park in London……. Cue insanity and people kicking the crap out of each other.

Scorpieau - Dance to the Radio
In late July Dance to The Radio asked if we would like to contribute a song to their 4x12 series, a resounding yes was uttered, especially since heavy bands dont tend to get released on DTTR

In November Gavin Lawson of Yes Boss fame released a compilation CD funded by Leeds Art Council entitled ‘Us and them’ the basic premise being DJs remixing bands songs and Bands doing versions of the DJs songs, our contribution being ‘Reverse 2012’ ….have a goosey at Gavs video remix of ‘I hate this, do you like it?’

New album recording begins - November/December
Since Matt joined we've been constantly writing new stuff but with the ridiculously busy year we've had there hasn't been much time to concentrate on purely writing for our next album however during November and December we began writing and recording the album at Ghost town studios with Ross Halden.

The particular aim being to push ourselves, try new things and not repeat what we had done previously. What we have recorded so far in my opinion blows everything we have done before out of the water, diversity will be the real key to this next album and we're all really looking forward to hearing the final thing once we get there....

Second lot of album sessions......

Bonjourno, welcome to, Chickenhawk : recording the new album, Part II, "This time it's personal", with myself - Roberto as your host.

This is what happened........

(Cue nonsense)

Friday 18th (Evening Only)
We aren't full time rockers yet, so any recording midweek or outside of holidays has to be done in the evenings. Theres no Mathew 'Barry' Reid tonight, so its just the three of us that play things on strings. Tonights aim is to add layers, textures and beef to the three songs we have previously recorded drums and guitars for: 'Pla' 'Bees' and 'King' (soon to be renamed).
We have the tools but we need cider, mulled wine and a man called Ross........

Everything seems to be going swimmingly so far during the recording even with the minor creative differences that sometimes rear their ugly head, it's still all good stuff that is happening. The whole album so far is a definate step up from the first one, then again i have to say that, in all honesty this is so much more a band album than the first one, plus its the first one with Barry Reid involved. Theres no bass yet so its tempting to beef the guitars out to compensate. I think 'Pla' is my favourite so far, the double kick on it is pretty special and goes through a lot of different moods within the song. Sticks triumphant harmonized part in the middle is so brilliant, ive been singing it ever since.

Something bizarre happens at around 2am. I had an idea for the intro to 'King', i dont know what happened but suddenly we're all on the floor (including Ross) turning knobs, dials and switches. A bit of 'internet-daddy-wizard-magic' (aka producing) and the intro is born. Its good, thats my opinion, tell me yours in 2010 please. By 3:30 ideas and madness has set in, we decide to call it a night, i couldnt even tell you the last thing we were doing. I promised Ross mulled wine though, Stick's attempt at heating it on a radiator didnt work...maybe tomorrow......

Saturday 19th (Evening Only)
More recording drums drums drums, 2 new songs to record drums for today. Recording begins at roughly 7pm, Mat lays down some delightful parts for songs with the working titles of 'I'm not your mate' and 'Shuffle' although everyone probably knows them as different song names at this point (we're yet to decide on the final names). I would describe shuffle as a restrained affair with hints of doom and maybe even an element of TREX, yes we said TREX. Im not your mate is a full on balls out rock fest, get your downpicking out boys and girls....

Mat puts in a beat in Shuffle that i didnt think would find a place on a chickenhawk album, it has and its banging..... Wait and see folks.

Next stick lays down some mighty rhythm guitar tracks, while the rest of us trade off Phil Anselmo impressions.....cue chugs.... New songs are different in styles again and will add some delightful variety to the album but it all gels great. Rhythm tracking is finished at 3:30am and its time for bed.

Sunday 20th (Allday)
After myself and the 'daddy-wizard' (Ross) had finished our delightful breakfast at a cafe bar ran by 3 camp elderly gentlemen, it was time to record more drums for the 'Slow one' (the working titles we have for these songs are very inventive). For those unaware of Ghosttown Studios, it is run in a giant room almost like a scout hut. This room + this time of year - central heating = frozen digits. Thankfully Ross has many heaters to get our bodies thawing. Barry Reid and I run through the song a good few times to make sure its bob on and Mat lays down some impressive drum tracking. Again this track is all over the place... polyrhythms, d-beats, straight forward beats. Listening to the drum tracks alone gives you a much greater sense of the power of Mat, can't wait to add guitars to this one. Oh yeah, you want a description of this one... slow, widdly, moody and face melting... I'd be an ace reviewer tut' tut'...

CHICKENHAWK 'REMIX' AVAILABLE
This month also sees the release of the 'Us & Them' compilation. Which includes our new track 'Reverse 2012.' The basic premise being Djs remixing bands songs, in this case Gavron (yes boss) remixing I Hate this, do you like it?' and us taking snippets of some of his tracks, putting them in a blender adding saffron, riffs and hawk and distilling the result.

The compilation is free and will be available in music shops across Leeds as well as on the front cover of the next 'Vibrations' magazine. A snippet will be available very soon on our myspace, keep your eyes peeled for now 'enjoy' a video diary from the recording here.

NEW ALBUM IN THE MAKING
Finally, we have lots of plans for next year including some very special tour supports we will be announcing next year. Some new releases, but most importantly a NEW ALBUM! Currently in the making, we are pretty much half way through to completing it! Watch out in 2010 - the year of the HAWK!

Gigs with Fall of Troy so far......

Tue 17th November

So the first of our 3 gigs with The Fall of Troy starts in Leeds at the Cockpit today, we take our backline down to the venue and i very cleverly bash my car in the really well designed rear entrance of the cockpit, uggggg.........Apparently we are super late Stick and Ryan are already down there setting up drums and amps, me and matt stroll in and everythings pretty much set up......this must be what its like to have roadies, take note singer and bassist.........We manage to squeeze in a quick soundcheck of 'Son of Cern' everything sounds pretty good and as people are starting to come in Captain Simon of Brew RECORDS fame is setting up all our merch stuff, first time i've seen a real life copy of the Dance to the Radio 4 x 12 in real life wowowowow, i dont know why they made the cds so big though......
As we getting ready to play a girl at the front asks me if she can have a look at the setlist, i dont think she realised i was nothing to do with The Fall of troy, bless.....i shouldve forced my autograph on her.
We generally play pretty well, we go down pretty well, always a strange situation when you know most people arent there to watch you but by the end of the set the room is still packed so thats a good sign, i think, either way i had fun.......

Wed 18th November
Manchester Academy 3 is like bizarre maze, the gig room is on one side but the lift is on the other side of the building, i only realise there is a lift after i have lugged a load of stuff up a million flights of stairs (yes this number is mathmatically correct)
Apparently Elliot Minor are also playing in another room somewhere else in the Academy, they have a big green van, thats all the factual information i can give you about them.

We are playing early tonight at 7:45, people are only just coming is as we are about to play, the sound is much better tonight and we are playing is 2.343 times better. I accidently cover Fall of Troy's drummer in beer while were playing, soz like, it was the riffs fault. Ryan's uncle came down to see us, he is more metal than you'll ever be, dont even try.........
'Joe Balls' appears mid set to help us with equipment, hes on stage straight away fixing stuff, stick gets the crowd to say 'hello joe balls' hello joe balls, you have nice face. Really enjoyed playing tonight, i think it helps that the Academy seemd to have a team of 5 sound men. The dressing room is like a sixth form common room, its a nice change to have some seats to sit on, what??? we have some beer too?????? wowowowowowowow, easily pleased......

Recording of Album number 2 begins......

So all of this week we have been at Ghost Town Studios again beginning to record our second album with Ross Halden.
The plan for the week was to get the rough skeleton(drums and rhythm guitars) of 3 songs in place. The three songs are nameless at the moment, lets call them 'fast' 'King song' and 'spikey.' Tuesday, day number 1 was spent getting a delightfully good drum sound and tracking 'fast.' Ross is a very patient man, where ever we record we do do a good job of pushing engineers and producers to the limit.....Thanks Ross you are a nice man....

Once again Matt 'Barry' Reid steps up to the plate recording some absolutely ridiculous drum tracks that fuck with my head and i know how the songs should go. (at least i think i do....im sure we'll find out....)
On day 2 (wednesday) we finished tracking the drums for the other 2 songs, Matt's shuffle on 'King song' was a particular highlight for me, good work Barry! Having 2/3 takes of each song enabled us to choose the best takes but by and large 90% of what Matt recorded was gold......

Thursday was spent tweaking drums and editing the sound, it sounds massive!!! like a giant elephant crossed with a giant crocodile crossed with a giant peacock crossed with a giant, yes folks that massive ---John Bonham who???
I enojoyed reading Ross' fine collection of 'Tape Op' magazine, especially the sections where Engineers and producers just moan.....boo hoohoo im sorry you had to master the new Metallica record that mustve been such a shame for you.......

Friday was guitar tracking day, all the rhythm guitars were tracked for 'spikey' including some massive chunky rhythm from Stick which sounds mental on 'the marching riff' This was all completed roughly by about 2:30am Saturday morning by that point everything went a bit delirous, overdubs then turned backwards, recording computer speakers through a phaser.......was it any good...................

A few months ago we were asked to play Crossfire’s Halloween Massacre, all the information we were given was that Pendulum played it last year and that it was held in a car park somewhere in London. Being a big fan of car parks myself we had to say yes!

Literally after brainwash festival on Friday we travelled down to London, so we could have a leisurely day in London we no stress from travelling. London is madness to drive round, I cant get my head round it at all and London drivers just do whatever they want…….

We arrive at said secret car park location at 5pm ish to see lots of vans and lots of equipment being carted round, apparently everything is running very late however they have constructed a half pipe in a couple of hours, good work, ill show them my amazing skills later, if you were an extra in the zombie video you’ll already know I am allergic to skateboards……

Soundcheck sounds amazing considering its in a massive carpark but after that theres a lot of hanging round until people start coming in, apparently 500 tickets have been sold and theres an extra 175 on the door, this is going to be pure chaos later on…….

Theres lots of skateboarders that turn up early so we hang about watching them for a bit, I refrain from showing them my library of tricks, I just bask in the knowledge I am better than them all………..clearly…….My favourite trick is staying on the board longer than 10 seconds.

The queue for the place is right down the round with the security doing a ridiculously tight job of frisking every individual before they are let in. I think this adds to Zac the organisers stress but it seems like the whole world has turned up to party.

Once the place fills up and djs start playing it really becomes a proper party with a massive range of Halloween costumes, my favourite is Michael Jackson with a pumpkin for a head.

We are ready to play at 12:30 and the place is rammed, whether people have heard of us or not doesn’t matter………..

As soon as the first guitar riff is played the place goes mental, circle pits people throwing themselves round, pure chaos, fucking brilliant, Stick spends a couple of songs singing in the middle of people slamming themselves around my guitar gets knocked out of tune a million times but it was amazing……best gig ever? Maybe…….thanks crossfire….

Recording Diary Part 1

Day 1 recording
Location: Ghost Town Studios with Ross Halden in Leeds
Reason: New track 15PETER2012 for 'Us and them' remix compilation album.
Rob: Guitar

Ok so the idea behind this new compilation is that bands take songs created by DJs and transform them into something of their own and vice versa. So Gavron (yes boss) is remixing 'I Hate this, do you like it?'
Mr. Gavron sent us excerpts of 4 of 5 of his songs to which we listened to and decide which parts of sections would work as a chickenhawk riff or as part of a song, we then created a song around these parts adding lots more riffs and sections. The final result being a million miles from the starting point we were given.

Having recorded with Ross before he knows how we work and vice versa and we know he does a fantastic job, the only problem is that he when we first recorded with him in 2005 he was clean cut, shaved hair hip hop beat making guru, now he resembles Mr. Grunge, this is what recording riffs does to you.............be warned...........

Day 1 is Matt Reid day, we arrive at the studios 6:30 on a tuesday, Ross has turned into Mr. DIY and really transformed his studios since we recorded 'Scorpieau' with him a matter of months ago. Matt sets up all his drums and Ross fiddles with microphones while i get down to more important business such as getting the coffee machine to work. Stick is out of it at home ill so we are already a man down.......

I have to say we (i say 'we' i really mean ross and we supervised) achieved an awesome drum sound very quickly, previous recording sessions we have fiddled with microphones and room positions for a long time before being happy......

I sit in with Matt and create a guide track for guitars whilst he smashes the s h i t out of his drums, again the track seems to come together very quickly as we only really run through the song 4 or 5 times. In the control room listening back to the drum track there is some pretty impressive stuff that Matt plays on this song, it might well even be my favourite Matt Reid drum track he has done with Chickenhawk yet........ Ill try not to ruin it tomorrow.......

Day one

We turn up at ghosttown one man down, as Paul has succumbed to deadly Swine Flu, and haul all the gear up into Ross's attic studio and start setting Matt's drums up. The obligatory hour of tuning skins, hitting single drums and moving mic's is spent till Ross achieves that Eureka moment and finds the banging drum sound he is after. Bingo, time for drum tracking..... Rob sets up a basic tone for a guide and he and Mat run through the track 5 or 6 times till we have a few takes we are really happy with. Cue coffee break and some listening back followed by comping the best bits of Matt's achievements. The result of which sounds awesome. Dancing around the control room follows and somebody's trousers may have fell down. We pull the drum kit apart and go home happy with the evening's work.
Life Food

Day two

Today we start on guitars properly, we are still a man down as Paul is holed up in his bed speaking in tongues, we decide it's probably best to leave him there and crack on with Rob's parts. We try a variety of cabs and dial settings with the Matamp beast, and inevitably end up with the first setup we tried. Ross then whips out his recording cape of power and daddy wizard staff and gets ready to press the big red button of riff capture (this may in fact be a lie) Rob lays down all his parts in a good amount of time, layering up basic rhythm tracks, and doing some wah of death overdubs. High fives all round. We then setup the bass rig and get a sexy, warm yet growling tone to underpin all the good work that has come before. I then start tracking and get halfway through before somebody notices it's 2 in the morning and brains are bleeding out of ears. Time to stop and reconvene the following evening.

Shot in four days over a three week period, the Chickenhawk music video/zombie epic pulled together hundreds of people and created a community based blood fest that Leeds had never seen before. The project was designed to not only be a vast scale, but living(dead) proof that a high level of film production can be achieved with a small budget, as long as you keep your hanging eyeballs on the cash and the ambition.

Written and directed by NME Photographer Danny North and developed by Roach Productions, the video spent three months in pre-production creating a story that could be loyal to influences such as Day Of The Dead (2002), 30 Days of Night and 28 Days Later, but still be maintained in the confines of a music video. Modern zombie horror cinema saw a change in the pace or horror and this had a massive influence on the styling of the film.

The whole film was shot in Leeds, West Yorkshire with local locations including the huge open space in Hyde Park and the Brudenell Social Club. The locations that were selected all suited the grittiness and bleak apocalypse of the lo-fi style whilst maintaining the accessibility needed between sets. Though no actual sets were built, the idea behind the use of the open sets was to add to the increasing fear element of it being just like everyday life.

To coincide with the series of videos the band has been involved with the A.Or Not? EP is officially out this Wednesday!

The A.Or Not? EP is the first Chickenhawk release on Brew and a follow up to their S/T debut album. These tracks lead the way towards a new album and plenty of touring. All tracks were recorded, mixed & mastered by Jason Sanderson (The Plight, Rolo Tomassi, Mirimar Disaster, Azriel, The Freezing Fog). Chickenhawk will be touring the UK in September, October and November.

Exciting times in Hawkland

So a lot has happened since we last posted on here, I'll try and sum up quickly and tell you of some exciting things which are coming up.

1. - Vibrations article was published, we'll post that up on here when we get a scan of it, in the mean time there's a copy of the front cover down below as shot by the awesome Danny North. Click on it to get a big version and go to Danny's Flickr!

2. - The Zombie Video's filming has been wrapped up and is in the editing / post production stage. Hopefully it's all on course for our EP release show on September the 4th, more on that later. See below for Matthew as a delightful Zombie and a group shot from the first day of filming. Brew also have more shots on their Flickr page here

3. The Kong tour in July was amazing. Thanks so much to the guys from Kong and their tech's, Joe and Whalley, for being great touring buddies. A special thanks to Kyle from Roach productions for tagging along to capture the fun! Hopefully our paths will cross again very soon. Robert has written a tour diary for RockMidgets.com which should be up soon.

4. - We are playing Leeds / Reading festival ! We played our futuresound heat on the 7th July and the runners up and overall winner were announced one by one over 5 excruciating hours via Leeds Music Forum on the 28th July. Needless to say we are over the moon with this and are very much looking forward to playing! Maybe see some of you there, we are playing the 'BBC introducing stage' just after 12 midday, Friday in Leeds, Saturday in Reading. If you are at either please come and say hello. We may have some cheeky exclusive samplers of some description. There's a review of our futuresound gig here

5. The release of our new ep 'A.or not?' draws closer and to celebrate we're having a party at the library with our friends Blacklisters, Godzilla Black and These Monsters, and hopefully premiering the zombie mini epic music video for 'I hate this, do you like it?'. THE EP IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER FROM BREW RECORDS. We have a deal that includes a tshirt and ep and probably some badges so go visit Brew's shop and get involved here. Expect to see some promo stuff popping up in the next few weeks including snippets of the live gig contained on the EP's enhanced cd and a studio diary of the recording process.

6. Last but not least we have recorded a new song which is to be released before the year is out. 'More info please..' I hear you cry. Well we can't really talk about that as of yet but rest assured we haven't forgotten about writing songs and are looking to still do an album to be hopefully released in the first half of next year.

Weeeeellll, first of all this coming monday 29th June, pick up a copy of vibrations magazine if you are around Leeds, you might recognise the chalky chaps on the front, yep someones daft idea to put us on a front cover of a magazine, people will be asking for a refund even though its free......
Next week we will also be filming the final part of the zombie video so it can be edited together in time for ep release and video premiere.
Hawk at the minute are in the process of writing new songs for the next album, expect it to be nothing like the chickenhawk of the debut album, what would be the point of doing that all over again?

Today was day one of the zombie video shoot, by the time me and Stick arrived at 7:50 (not late not late not late) there was already a marquee 20 zombies made up and filming happening. The first scene with me involved me skateboarding across a skate park, lets just say after multiple takes someone else did that scene instead of me.

Hello,

So we finally got the 2 new tracks mixed and mastered back from Jason Sanderson (Errander / Rolo Tomassi / Lavotchkin) yesterday.

Track titles include 'I hate this, do you like it?' & 'Son of CERN'. As part of the EP, we will also include a remastered version of 'NASA Vs ESA' taken from our debut album.

There will also be a CD-Rom section featuring the video to 'NASA Vs ESA', a live set of the Bull & Gate show in London from our most recent tour, a 'making of' documentary from the 'NASA Vs ESA' video and a load of photo's and other stupid stuff.

All to be released on Brew Records - home to Kong / I Concur / Castrovalva.

The release date is scheduled for the end of Summer just after our UK tour with the mighty Kong.

Bonjourno, we played at RPC last night in Leeds, it was a tremendously lovely time, matt entranced everyone with his very own interpretation of the entire Dangeroud album. Guitar Overdubs are now finished for the ep. Stick is finishing the vocals this week and tour begins on friday...............We begin filming our new video very shortly details soon, its big..............

We are back from the first recording session with Jason Sanderson. What we have so far we are more than happy with. Its a definate step on from the album, matt more than stepped up to the plate with his drumming, what a good lad......
Our e.p release date is now scheduled for 3rd August, Nasa vs Esa video will be released very soon and some ridiculous news to come about the next video....

On 7th/8th March Chickenhawk will venture to Barnsley once again, to record 2 new tracks for an e.p/single out on Brew records in July. 'Son of Cern' and 'New one' are a step on from what we've done before and will be the first time we've recorded as a four piece. If it all goes tits up, we'll just delete Matt's parts and get stick to do it........

We played with Monotonix last night, what a lovely time, their live show is brilliant, however the part i most enjoyed was when the guitarist was selling a copy of their album to someone and just said 'not as good as the live show' to the lucky recipient.

Hi folks, thanks to everyone who gave a shit enough to buy the album, muchly appreciated, they are selling pretty well, especially given the fact we've only played 2 gigs since its release.
October sees many many lovely time gigs all over the place: Stoke, Edinburgh, Lincoln, you name it we probably aren't playing there................

We've currently penned 1.5 new songs as a four piece one entitled 'Son of Cern' one not entitled. In other delightful news we're also now playing Brainwash festival on October 17th with Forward Russia and Jon Gomm, internet fame here we come..........

Also, give us gigs espeically if they are not in leeds............

November 17th is the shop release date for the album.....get involved, its already in smaller Leeds shops such as Crash and Jumbo................

Album is finally here

Finally finall finally, Chris of Sound Devastation fame has just recieved the copies of the album hot off the press and all that malarkey. Anyone who preordered the album should get it early next week ( i think they are being posted monday or tuesday.) That means preorder folk will get their copies the same time we get ours, im pretty sure that means everyone who preordered the album is now a member of Chickenhawk.
We will be selling the album at gigs for the lovely sum of £8, im sure they'll be some sort of album plus tshirt deal.
Next gig - 28th August at Cardigan Arms, this becomes an unoffical kind of release show in a way.

We are now about 4/5 weeks away from the album actually being released, the artwork having finally been sent off and all sorted. We played Newcastle the other week which was again fraught amp troubles however we were saved by a man named John, lovely lovely, thankyou.......
Gig was ok, we played ok but not that great Matthew was stuck behind all the amps not being able to hear anything............boooo..........
In other news future releases will include 4 e.ps more info to follow, hold your horses albums not out, woah..................

In other news we played in Leeds on 25th may, that was interesting beer + gig + birthday = a very lovely time. We are playin Newcastle on Thursday. Good and Bad News from the world of Sound Devastation:

Bad- Album is further delayed due to problems arising with pressing .

Good - SD should have a load of chickenhawk tshirts for sale on the shop. Pre-order people will be given the change to get one for a reduced rate because we initially wanted to include these in a pre-order package. WIN!

Gigs last week

We had a lovely time in Leeds on Thursday You Judas and Blacklisters were both brilliant and we played pretty well. Stick got a parking ticket, i dont think that was in the plan......
Bolton was as delightful as ever, we played better than in Leeds and sold some cds which was also delightful, we played with Ladycop from New York they were a bit like Radiohead although we only saw their soundcheck, last time we played in Bolton the PA that wasnt in use or even plugged in blew up whilst we were playing so we at least improved on that............
